There will be a national demonstration to mark United Nations Anti-Racism Day on Saturday 19th March 2016. The demonstration’s slogan this year is Refugees Welcome – Stand up to racism, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism and fascism.
The details of the event are as follows and it is extremely important that all CWU branches make every effort to attend this timely demonstration.
DATE: Saturday 19th March 2016
ASSEMBLE: 12 noon – BBC, Portland Place, London, W1A 1AA (nearest tube Oxford Circus) followed by Trafalgar Square rally at 2.00pm
I will be speaking at the rally and the CWU is proud to be supporting this demonstration along with the TUC, Unison, NASUWT, NUT, PCS, the Refugee Council and many other organisations.
The continuing refugee crisis across Europe demonstrates the desperation felt by the many thousands of people fleeing the horror of war; jeopardising their lives and those of their families to get to a place of safe sanctuary.
The debate taking place about our future in the EU will also inevitably lead to the refugee situation being used in a divisive way and the trade union movement has a vital role to play in ensuring that we stand together against fascism – and fight against all attempts to use this crisis as a vehicle to advance racism, Islamophobia and anti-Semitism across the continent.
The CWU always stands up for its principles and we shall do so with our colleagues on Saturday 19th March 2016. I would urge all branches to be in attendance.
